How to Replace a Saab 93 Key Fob

Every car should have a key fob that has a transmitter/remote that can lock and unlock your vehicle. The batteries in these devices could be faulty.

If you are looking at purchasing a Saab 93 and don’t have two keys, you can get one for around $400. This requires purchasing a brand new TWICE module from a dealer and installing it with a special hand-held computer called a Tech2.

Keys Replacement

Many pre-owned Saabs come with only one key. It is a good idea as soon as possible, to buy a spare key. This will be less expensive than replacing the entire vehicle if you lose it. It is crucial to rotate the keys to keep them from wearing and wear and tear.

If you lose your sole key you will need to replace the CIM (Column Integration Module) or TWICE (Theft Warning Integrated Central Electronics) module and a new one and a specific program to convince the car you’re not attempting to steal it. These modules can cost upwards of $400 to replace and are only available through mail purchase. The majority of locksmiths or dealers cannot do the job within the same day.

The good news is, most modern saab replacement key vehicles can have a second key added to the system. This is possible without replacing the original computer. The dealer will have to use a special handheld computer known as a Tech-2 to add the second key and then program it into the vehicle. Some garages that are independent may also be able to do this but the process is more complicated and they will have to reprogram the EEPROM of your car’s computer to accept the new key.

Key Fobs for Replacement

Saab owners who have lost their key last year or had it stolen should get an immediate replacement as soon as they can. The steps involved in getting a new working Saab 9-3 key fob will require the dealer’s service department. It could cost hundreds of dollars, not including the price of a new key, a new TWICE module (theft warning integrated central electronics) and reprogramming to convince the vehicle that the new key isn’t stolen.

If you have a spare key however, the process is much less costly. The new key must be connected to the original TWICE Module. A second-hand one is not compatible. However an authentic OEM replacement can be purchased from the dealer at just a fraction of what it will cost.
