Whether it’s a wholesome movie date or a candle-lit dinner, there’s nothing quite like watching romance anime to get one’s heart fluttering. This new year comes with the promise of a lot of cute rom-com or romance dramas that will have the audience swooning! Arranged marriages, office romances, best friends to lovers, and even a little enemies-to-lovers, this year’s romance anime genre brings forth a variety of dynamics for fans to enjoy. Without further ado, here are some romance anime that we’re excited to see in 2023:
Based on Gido Amagakure’s manga, A Galaxy Next Door follows struggling manga artist, Ichiro Kuga, who is trying to manage his life as an artist while also trying to support his younger siblings. Things become more difficult for Ichiro when his assistant quits. Things take an interesting twist when a strange, mysterious beauty shows up at his doorstep. Shiori Goshiki claims that not only is she a gifted artist, but she also declares she’s engaged to him. Ichiro is left to balance his life with his younger siblings and his new fiancé. Judging from the trailer, it seems sparks soon fly as the two get to know one another. Produced by Asahi Productions, the animation for A Galaxy Next Door also seems quite mesmerizing with its bright tones matching up perfectly with the light-hearted romance theme. It’s set to release in April 2023.
The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague promises an office romance like no other. Based on Miyuki Tonogaya’s manga series, The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague has been adapted into an anime series by Zero-G, the same studio behind works like My Roommate is a Cat and Dive!. Set in a workplace where some of the employees have a superpower, or more precisely, are descendents of yokai. The story centers around Himuro, who has the ability to freeze anything when he gets too emotional, and Fuyutsuki, who has a cool personality. Unlike the usual broody male lead, Himuro is actually kind and sweet. It seems that it’s love at first sight as he meets his colleague, Fuyutsuki, and can’t help but freeze up, literally. Judging from the trailer, the anime seems pretty cute. It would be interesting to see how Himuro navigates through his supernatural abilities, all while balancing his feelings for his co-worker. This anime already started airing in January.
Everyone loves a good best friends-to-lovers trope, and it seems that this is exactly what Tomo-Chan is a Girl! promises. Based on Fumita Yanagida’s manga series of the same name, Tomo-Chan is a Girl! follows a high-school girl who is in love with her childhood best friend, Junichirou, but he treats her the same way as he does with his guy friends. With Junichirou unable to look past her tomboy persona, Tomo decides to take matters into her own hands. Tomo is determined to make her best friend look at her as a girl and a possible love interest. What makes Tomo-Chan is a Girl! different from other anime with similar tropes is that Tomo gets in touch with her feminine side without changing her own style. It started airing in January 2023.
The popularity of the villainess subgenre isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Tezuka Productions’ recent anime Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte, which premiered in January 2023, is just another addition to the subgenre. The anime follows two high schoolers, Endo and Kobayashi, who discover that their voices can be heard by Prince Siegwald Fitzenhagen, the fiancé of the villainess Lieselotte in their otome game, A Magical Romance. The fate of all the characters changes as the two high-schoolers shout advice to Lieselotte’s fiancé. Unlike the usual isekai anime, where characters are transported into a different world, instead there’s only a minor connection between the two worlds, making the anime quite refreshing to watch.
Masamune-kun Revenge R follows the titular character, Masamune Makabe, who was close friends with Aki Adagaki while the two were younger. However, Aki rejects Masamune and makes fun of him by calling him “Pig’s Foot”. Years later, when the two meet again, this time Masamune has a new name and has lost all the baby fat, he plans to make Aki fall for him and then reject her the same way she had. The first season ended with Aki punching Masamune during the kiss in the school’s Snow White play. Masamune-kun Revenge R is expected to pick up from there on. The previous season also seemed to tease a trip to Paris and some potential new characters. With season two set to premiere in April 2023, many fans are curious to see whether Masamune-kun will be successful in his quest for revenge or will he and Aki fall in love along the way!
Based on Saekisan’s light novel series, The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten has already started airing since January 2023. The anime follows Amane, a high school student who lives alone, who discovers that he lives next door to the most beautiful girl from his school, Mahiru. They two barely interact until one rainy day, he lends her his umbrella. To return his favor, Mahiru offers to help Amane with house chores. Over time, the relationship between the two develops and sparks begin to fly. Judging from the trailer, the anime has a sweet romance that will have the audience’s heart-fluttering as they watch the two fall in love.

The most famous and most devastating is probably the “Moon Spiral Heart Attack” executed with the Spiral Heart Moon Rod. Combine these powers with the fact that Sailor Moon can transform into new and more powerful forms, along with her ability to combine powers with other Sailor Scouts and there’s no doubt that Usagi is a powerhouse!
