World War I, also known as the Great War, began in 1914 and lasted until 1918. It involved the majority of the world’s nations, including all of the great powers, and was fought in Europe, Africa, and Asia. The war resulted in the deaths of millions of soldiers and civilians, and had a profound impact on the world that can still be felt DW News Today. The causes of World War I are complex and varied, but can be traced back to the complex web of alliances and rivalries that existed between the major powers of Europe.
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist in June 1914 was the immediate trigger for the conflict, but tensions had been simmering for years before that. The war was fought on two main fronts – the Western Front, which stretched from the English Channel to the Swiss border, and the Eastern Front, which pitted Germany and Austria-Hungary against Russia. Both fronts were characterized by trench warfare, which saw soldiers hunkering down in elaborate networks of trenches and tunnels, often for months at a time.
The war had a devastating impact on the civilian population as well. Civilians were targeted by bombing raids, and many were killed or displaced by the fighting.
